HTC To Ditch Qualcomm?

HTC To Ditch Qualcomm?

It’s an unconfirmed rumor at the moment, but there are some parties who are speculating that HTC might be contemplating moving away from Qualcomm’s sluggish chips, and instead will go for Ericsson’s Mobile Platform (EMP), especially since they produce one of the smallest tri-band 3.5G chipsets. Would you be happy for such a development, or are you indifferent to the whole thing?

HTC Iolite Surfaces

HTC Iolite Surfaces

The new HTC Iolite (not Lolite) hasn’t been officially announced yet, but there are specifications of the phone floating around the Internet. It’s a little disappointing to see that the Iolite will use a WQVGA display instead of the VGA displays that we’re growing accustomed to. There isn’t any mention of how much this phone will cost or when it will be available, but it certainly shouldn’t take too long. The phone will have some rather cool features such as A-GPS, Bluetooth, a 3.2 megapixel camera, Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, 528MHz processor and a microSD card expansion slot.

HTC S743 At CES

HTC S743 At CES

HTC has shown its latest slider smartphone over at CES 2009 – the S743. While the name isn’t all that exciting, the phone looks like an ordinary candybar, but will be able to slide out a full QWERTY keyboard from the side when you want to. It’s a little disappointing that the phone doesn’t feature a touchscreen, though there are some other fancy features that could possibly make up for that. There isn’t any mention of pricing just yet, though we’ll probably need to wait for a carrier to pick one up before we get an actual subsidized price. Features of the S743 include:

  • 12-key keypad design
  • Full slide-out QWERTY keyboard
  • Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system
  • Supports HSDPA (850/1900MHz) networks
  • 2.4" QVGA display
  • Microsoft Exchange support

Android On HTC Touch Diamond

Android On HTC Touch Diamond

Google's Android has been ported to many devices, and next up is HTC's Touch Diamond. A user over at xda-developers.com has managed to port it over, though it's far from complete at the moment, with many kinks that need to be worked out. Since the HTC Touch Diamond and Touch Pro share similar specifications, aside from the slide-out keyboard, maybe users will port Android over to the Touch Pro too.

Free Ringtones From HTC

Free Ringtones From HTC

It's nothing too earth-shattering, but we aren't going to complain about free stuff. We're talking about the free ringtones that HTC are giving out to their e-club members. Registration is free, and after that, you'll be able to download said ringtones in MP3 format, meaning it can be used on any Windows Mobile device.

TouchFLO 3D Christmas Clock

TouchFLO 3D Christmas Clock

Sometimes it's the little things that make us smile, and with all the hustle and bustle with our daily chores, a simple Christmas clock might be all it takes to bring a smile to your face and remind you to take a break from work. If it reminds us that we should all take a break for Christmas, this clock theme will probably have served its purpose.

GPS On Verizon Touch Pro

GPS On Verizon Touch Pro

Users who don't want to wait for Verizon to unlock the GPS on their mobile phones in the first half of 2009 will be able to follow a guide that has been posted by some users from PPC Geeks. It might be a little tricky, as it involves installing some cab files, running PPST, a soft reset and some hacking with Qualcomm's QPST programming tool. Quite a few users have given some positive feedback regarding this hack, and are getting GPS locks within a minute using third-party GPS software. As usual, do try these things with caution, as you wouldn't want to have a bricked cell phone during Christmas.

HTC Touch Diamond Locking Screens

The Windows Mobile user interface sure isn't a work of art that will send users into frenzies to try and get it, unlike the iPhone. Fortunately for Windows Mobile, plenty of people are looking to make the mobile operating system look a lot prettier, and one such company is The Astonishing Tribe. They've come up with a couple of unlocking screens for the HTC Touch Diamond, and it certainly looks very cool.

HTC Touch HD Service Manual

HTC Touch HD Service Manual

T-Mobile's G1 service manual was leaked just yesterday, and now the service manual for HTC's Touch HD has surfaced. Even more surprising is the fact that the manual shows that the Touch HD has support for the 850 and 1900 HSDPA bands, which would lend credibility to those users who have brought the HTC Touch HD to the US and received 3G coverage. While this news won't mean that we'll get a carrier-subsidized Touch HD, but it does indicate that if you're resourceful enough to import one, you might be able to get the 3G support that we all want.
