Remember a couple of days ago we reported that security researcher and analyst TrevE found himself with a cease and desist letter from Carrier IQ? As it turns out thanks to the support from the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation), Carrier IQ has decided not pursue a lawsuit against TrevE, issuing a statement apologizing for their actions.

“Our action was misguided and we are deeply sorry for any concern or trouble that our letter may have caused Mr. Eckhart. We sincerely appreciate and respect EFF’s work on his behalf, and share their commitment to protecting free speech in a rapidly changing technological world.”

For those who may not be familiar with Carrier IQ, they’re a company who has their software installed on many of your Android phones from companies such as HTC and Samsung. The software was discovered by TrevE who reported that it was pretty much logging all of your activities in the background without your knowledge. While keystrokes and passwords may not have been recorded, we’re sure that the data collected might have made some users feel like their privacy has been violated.

Initially Carrier IQ was not too pleased with TrevE posting his findings, and thus sending him a cease and desist letter, asking for a retraction and threatening to sue for a violation of their copyrighted material. Well we guess things worked out in the end for TrevE, hopefully put an end to this issue.
