ZTE is gearing up to join the ‘phablet’ fray alongside the famous Galaxy Note and other ‘phablets’ like LG Optimus Vu and Panasonic’s Eluga Power. According to a report from Reuters, the head of handset strategy from ZTE, Lv Qianhao said, “We want to come up with the next generation of a Galaxy Note-type product – a combo product of handsets and tablets.” This follows an alleged report of an internal sales target set at shipping 40 million smartphones globally.

The figure is reportedly up by 30 million from a mere 10 million in 2011. On top of the Galaxy Note competitors, the company is also said to revamp its existing Skate and Blade handsets as well. The company’s executive director He Shiyou said at the annual analyst conference that was held in Shenzen, China, “In 2012, our aim is to increase handset margins. As handsets contribute more to overall revenue, it will affect our profit margins.” After the tragic Dell Streak, it would be refreshing to see more devices in the ‘phablet’ category become successful as just another option for consumers.
