Samsung to Drop Plastic IDs for NFC Smartphones at its HQ

With NFC being used primarily for financial transactions and endeavors like file transfers like with the Android Beam feature, it seems that Samsung has found yet another use for the technology that is still at its ‘maturing’ stage. All employees of companies will know about the plastic ID cards which have to be used to gain entry through most secure doors of companies. That is same for Samsung’s employees in the South Korean company headquarters. In an attempt to stave off extra expenditure on the plastic ID card system which leads to losses and subsequently extra losses due to replacements, the company has opted to implement a system whereby its employees have to use a NFC capable smartphone to beep their way on through.

Another reason attributed for the change is because Samsung believes that unlike the ID card, the NFC capable smartphones are less likely to be misplaced. On top of that, the ID card provides potential thieves with information about the access code if they can extract it. With the smartphones, the owners will probably lose personal information or god forbid, top secret company related information but Samsung doesn’t address that matter. The company has announced its intentions of implementing the same system at its other locations across the globe this year. Another good point about this system is that there is nothing like employees of a company using its products that help perpetuates a good name for the company.
