After getting acquired by Facebook for a staggering $1 billion, Instagram has hit a new milestone. The photo sharing application has now hit 40 million users on iOS along with an average on one million new signups daily. Based on the Instagram API used by the creator of an Instagram photo viewer called Gramfeed, the 40 millionth user to sign up for the service was a user called valentinoelbuti. This number is yet to be confirmed by Instagram.

In addition to that, the Android version of Instagram which was launched recently saw 5 million downloads in its first 5 days on the Google Play Store. But despite all the grumbles and allegedly angry users about both, the Android OS getting Instagram and the Facebook acquisition, the photo-sharing application shot to the top of the Apple’s App Store charts for the first time. As of now it has slipped back down to the number 2 spot. If the application continues to garner sign ups at this rate, over the next couple of months, we can expect to see a total of 60 million users on iOS’ version of Instagram alone.
