iPhone 4 implodes at a Hotel on the East Coast

A 51 year old woman has reported to Mashable that her iPhone 4 had burst open early in the morning billowing smoke in the hotel room 10 to 14 inches from where she was sleeping alone. The woman who declined to be named had woken up at 6:30am and smelt something strange in the air. She also heard “sizzling” and “popping” noises issuing from the iPhone 4 she had purchased from an Apple Store in Colorado where she is from. After that, the phone apparently started crackling filling up the room with smoke that smelt like putrid, burning plastic.

Mashable reports that she quickly leapt from the bed and with the assistance of her laptop case, she threw the smoking device into the hotel room sink. She apparently mentioned also that the smoke alarms had failed to work and that an electrician found nothing wrong with the room’s power outlet. She claims that the reason she approached Mashable was because Apple refused to publicly acknowledge the incident and she felt that an incident like this should be propagated to avoid a repetition of the sequence of events. While this is the first known case in the U.S, similar cases have been reported in Australia and Brazil in late 2011.

What the women wanted was an iPhone 4s in exchange for her dilapidated iPhone 4 but she was offered an iPhone 4 only. She claimed that maybe she is naive but she hates when companies have to wait for fatalities or something awful to happen before precautions are taken and she wishes to inform all iPhone 4 users to be aware of their device and not let the battery get too hot.
