There is a high possibility that Google Maps could be undergoing a paradigm shift following a stunt pulled off by Facebook employees on the roof of their headquarters. Facebook ordered a 42sqft large QR code to be painted on the roof of their headquarters. The code, when scanned with a QR reader will load your mobile phone’s browser with an URL.

The idea was in conjunction with “Space Hackaton” which was to decorate Facebook’s new headquarters in Silicon Valley, California. Although employees who were tasked with only decorating the rooms, one particular employee, Mike Pike decided to take it a step further and painted the extra large QR code on the roof with the help of 30 colleagues.

At the moment, it is only visible on a few images but you can be sure that in time, it will start to appear on services like Google Maps or Bing. With this stunt that Mike Pike pulled off probably just as a novelty, he might have pioneered a brand new method of media-based advertising. If you are like me and tried to scan the QR code, you will know that the corresponding website is not yet active and you will be greeted with a “coming soon” sign.
