CyanogenMod 9 for Kindle Fire updated with bug fixes

Heads up Amazon Kindle Fire owners, if you weren’t a fan of the version of Android that the device came loaded with, fret not as an update to the CyanogenMod 9 (CM9) has been made available for download. There are a couple of changes and updates made to the ROM, such as:

  • There’s a custom lockscreen which no longer has a camera option (since the Kindle Fire doesn’t have a camera).
  • Instead the lockscreen has a volume toggle option.
  • Long-pressing the power button brings up a CyanogenMod options menu for taking screenshots, adjusting audio settings, shutting down, or rebooting the tablet.

While those are some welcome updates, unfortunately there are some outstanding bugs the developers have yet to iron out. This includes the lack of support for hardware video encoding, which means that Netflix and YouTube HD videos are out, some sleep-related bugs, with the Kindle Fire’s CPU getting stuck at either high/low speeds while Flash videos won’t play in the web browser.

However if you’d like to get CM9 onto your Kindle Fire, pop on over to the XDA forums for the download link, and Liliputing for the install instructions. As with all unofficial updates or installations, proceed at your own risk!
