RIM sues KiK for patent infringement

Published

Looks like things aren’t going well between RIM and KiK. The relatively new instant messaging company just got the invitation to court by the manufacturers of BlackBerry. Apparently, their KiK instant messaging software has infringed some RIM patents and will have to settle it in court. The patent in question is rumored to be the message delivery status notification that is on the BlackBerry Messenger and Ping. I’m puzzled at this because Kik has mentioned that when they were starting out, they worked together with RIM in bringing Kik over to the BlackBerry. Shouldn’t have RIM pointed out the possible infringements before Kik got the support from them? Another thing is, Kik isn’t the only messenger software to use the real time indicator for delivered/read messages- Whatsapp has the same feature, why isn’t RIM taking them to court? It must have been something else to spark a lawsuit. Hopefully it’ll all be made clear in due time. What do you think it could be?
