It looks like the race for the worlds slimmest smartphone is not quite over just yet – as the folks over at China-based Oppo have stepped up to the plate and wrested this particular title away from Gionee. Their latest offering, the Oppo R5, happens to be the first smartphone in the world that breaks the sub-5mm barrier when it comes to the chassis thickness. Just how thin is the new $499 Oppo R5? We are talking about a mere 4.85mm here, which is territory that no other smartphone manufacturer has tread.

It will feature a 5.2” AMOLED display that carries a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels, which means it has a pixel density that is on part with that of the flagship Sony Xperia Z3 at 423ppi. A 64-bit Snapdragon 615 SoC which boasts of eight Cortex-A53 cores while running at 1.5GHz ain’t too shabby at all, really, and there will also be 2GB RAM and a 13MP, f/2.0 Sony IMX214 camera sensor that keeps it going.
