First it was Nokia that ruled the mobile phone world, and then came smartphones and the rise of South Korean companies such as Samsung and LG that helped to shape the landscape of players where Android-powered smartphones were concerned. Well, just like how we have learned in history, powers do come and go, and Huawei looks set to pounce on the opportunity of being the next big thing by making its way to the top of being a major player in the smartphone market, having shipped 16.8 million smartphones already in Q3 alone this year, with 26% of them being devices that resided in the mid-range to high-end scheme of things.

In fact, Huawei’s smartphone business grew by 23% overall compared to the previous year and 18% in its home country of China. It has also managed to penetrate select developing markets in a more impressive manner compared to the likes of Samsung, where shipments in the Middle East and Africa were up by 322% compared to the previous year. Will they have the momentum to last the distance? Only time will be able to tell.
