Samsung Galaxy S4 Will Not Be Supported By CyanogenMod

One of the perks of owning an Android device is the ability to flash custom ROMs onto your phone, giving you a different experience from the one the manufacturer intended. The bad news is that if you were planning on buying the Samsung Galaxy S4 and flashing a custom ROM like CyanogenMod onto it, you’re out of luck. The team behind CyanogenMod have stepped forward and claimed that they have no intention to support the Galaxy S4, claiming that due to Samsung omitting certain files, it made the entire process a lot harder for them, suggesting that perhaps Samsung might not have the dev community’s best interests in mind.

Nobody at Team Hacksung (the team behind Galaxy S2, Note, S3, Note2, G Tabs… official CM ports) plans to buy it, neither develop for it. There are two variants which will be a pain to maintain, [and] the bugs we have on the S3 will probably be there on S4, too (camera), and we all know Samsung ability to release sources while staying in line with mainline. Yes Qualcomm releases sources, but Exynos sources we had were far from [working on] actual Galaxy products. I’m pretty sure the same will happen for this one.

That’s a uniform “no” from us.

This will no doubt cause a few Galaxy S4 would-be customers to rethink their decision, but with a plethora of custom ROMs out there, there are definitely alternatives. Then again CyanogenMod is one of the more popular ROMs out there, so this might not sit well with some users. Will the team change their mind in the future? It’s hard to say but in the meantime this is definitely worth taking into consideration.
