There is currently a trial going on between bitter rivals Apple and Samsung, and it is interesting to note that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has extended the temporary stay of Judge Lucy Koh’s preliminary injunction against the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. To put it in plain English, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is still legally allowed to be sold in the open in the US, instead of being shuttered and stashed away elsewhere, far from the prying eyes of the public. Samsung did put in a request for an expedited appeal that will happen on the 20th of August, where a decision is widely expected by industry insiders and watchers to be announced within the coming days or weeks.
According to Judge Lucy Koh, she battered down the injunction on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus for an alleged infringement of the 604 Siri patent that concerned universal or local search on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Samsung released updates after that to remove this feature, although did a U-turn afterwards and had another update which reinstated this feature. According to Samsung, they say that Siri is a different creature altogether where unified search is concerned under the 604 patent, and this patent was interpreted incorrectly, and hence, invalid.
