Sony plans quad-core phones for 2013

With HTC, LG and ASUS showing off quad-core powered devices, one has to wonder why Sony has yet to join the crowd. While the Xperia NXT series of handsets are pretty powerful in their own right, on paper and to the layman, dual-core might seem slower than quad-core, but Sony has their reasons according to Stephen Sneeden, product marketing manager for Sony Mobile.

“We’re going to join quad-core when we feel that the performance matches the battery efficiency,” he said. “Because right now we don’t feel that is there. What we are going to be doing in the second half of the year is moving to the Cortex A15 architecture, which we feel outperforms the current quad-core architecture.

However all is not lost as Sony plans to launch quad-core phones by 2013. Either way we have yet to try any of these new phones yet for ourselves, so for now we are unable to see if Sony is right to stick to dual-core processors in an industry where quad-core is the trend.
