HTC Desire Z receives unofficial Android 4.0 ROM

While the HTC Desire Z was a decent phone back in the day, unfortunately it was one of the phones that HTC has decided would not be upgraded to Android 4.0. Naturally this bummed out a lot of Desire Z owners, but thanks to the hardworking Android community and the developers over at the XDA forums, it looks like an unofficial Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich ROM has been created for the HTC Desire Z.

The ROM is based off the HTC One V which appears to be a good place to start, considering that both devices are powered by single-core processors and feature WVGA resolutions. However since this is an early build, it is to be expected that there will be a couple of bugs present, not to mention missing features or features that aren’t working at the moment. Some broken features includes the camera and WiFi hotspot, and the screen has been known to rotate with accelerometer even when the keyboard is open.

However if you can live without the camera and WiFi hotspot, the major features are working, such as the touch screen, phone calls, data 2G/3G, WiFi, SD card, hardware keys and lights, Bluetooth, GPS, etc. Probably not the best idea to use this as a daily driver, but if you’re curious or if you’d like to help and provide feedback, head on over to the XDA forums for more info and for the download.
