Usually when it comes to rugged devices, it’s hardly ever a smartphone, but this it looks like Sony Ericsson will attempt to appeal to the outdoorsy and tech savvy crowd with their Xperia active Android smartphone. The Xperia active is boasted as being both water resistant and dust proof, although unfortunately that’s pretty much where the buck stops. No word if it will be able to withstand drops or falls from great heights, so we suggest you probably shouldn’t put it to the test.

As far as its other hardware is concerned, the Sony Ericsson Xperia active will feature a 3” display, built-in GPS, a barometer and compass, ANT+ wireless networking technology, a microSD card slot and will run on Android’s Gingerbread 2.3.4. The good news is that it’s an Xperia handset which means that the Xperia active is set to receive the Ice Cream Sandwich update in the not-too-distant future. If you’re interested in picking up the Sony Ericsson Xperia active for yourself, expect to fork out $369.99 for the device unlocked.
