LG’s China factory workers on strike, could cause LCD manufacturing delays

It appears that LG’s factory in China is currently experiencing a strike from about 8,000 of its factory workers. What does this mean for us consumers? Well, considering that LG is one of the main manufacturers of LCD panels for a number of companies, more notably Apple, the strike if not resolved soon could eventually lead to the company facing a massive backlog in their orders, which could ultimately force them to use lower-resolution displays that they have already manufactured.

LG’s China workers are apparently demanding a better pay, which is what LG’s workers in South Korea are currently receiving along with year-end benefits. So far an amicable solution has not been reached. However LG remains fairly optimistic about it and has since told The Korea Herald that their operations would not be drastically affected and that other factories can modify their production lines to fill in the missing demand.

With the iPad 2 facing shortages this year due to LCD issues from LG, and with rumors that LG is one of the LCD manufacturers for Apple’s rumored iPad 3, let’s hope that Apple’s next-generation iPad will not see a repeat of history.
