Internal iOS code names revealed

So for mobile platforms like Windows and Android, they always had code names accompanying them. For example Windows had NoDo and Mango, while Android has a variety of desserts used as code names, such as Froyo, Donut, Eclair, Ice Cream Sandwich, etc, so what happened to iOS? Too serious for code names? Hardly.

Apple’s Mac OS X has had code names, such as Leopard, Snow Leopard, and Lion, so why should iOS be any different, right? Turns out that yes, Apple does give iOS versions code names but they are used for internal reference as opposed to publicly naming them like their competitors do. According to iOS developer, Steve Troughton-Smith managed to get his hands on a list of iOS code names that Apple has used internally, and here they are:

  • 1.0: Alpine (1.0.0 – 1.0.2: Heavenly)
  • 1.1: Little Bear (1.1.1: Snowbird, 1.1.2: Oktoberfest)
  • 2.0: Big Bear
  • 2.1: Sugarbowl
  • 2.2: Timberline
  • 3.0: Kirkwood
  • 3.1: Northstar
  • 3.2: Wildcat (iPad only)
  • 4.0: Apex
  • 4.1: Baker
  • 4.2: Jasper (4.2.5 – 4.2.10: Phoenix)
  • 4.3: Durango
  • 5.0: Telluride
  • 5.1: Hoodoo

Unfortunately if you were hoping at hints of iOS 6 or future iOS versions, you’re out of luck. So which version was your favorite in terms of code names?
