iOS 5 code reveals iPad 3 with “J2” codename

We had just reported that apparently displays for an iPad with a resolution of 2048×1536 is currently in production. However a recent spotting in iOS 5’s code has revealed a new product – the J2. According to Digitimes, there are two tablets are currently prototypes that are being tested by Apple, the J1 and the J2 although it is unknown which model Apple plans to launch.

The J2 model appears to be the model that we reported about earlier that would sport a larger display, essentially transforming it into a Retina-like display for the iPad 3. However due to this larger resolution and the need for the iPad 3 to sport twin LED bars as opposed to one, manufacturers are having a hard time keeping the device thin, which could explain why Apple has yet to decide which model they would launch.

Let’s hope that earlier reports of Sharp, Samsung and LG Display already in production of the 2048×1536 display might indicate that we will be seeing an iPad 3 next year with a Retina display.
