Chimei Innolux unveils 4.3″ 720p 3D display

As far as 3D displays for our phones go, the more well known devices would be the HTC EVO 3D and the LG Optimus 3D. While both have 3D displays that are by all reports pretty decent, there has yet to be a 3D display for our smartphones that comes in HD – at least until now. Chimei Innolux (CMI) has recently debuted a 720p HD 3D display at FPD International in Yokohama, Japan.

This would be a glasses free display, and amazingly enough they have managed to squeeze all this into a 4.3” display, which sounds like just about the right size for our smartphones these days. Interestingly this makes use of MasterImage’s patented technology, a process called “Cell Gap”, which allows for crisp 2D viewing of up to 180 degrees when you’re out of the 3D viewing angle. No word on when they plan to put these into mass production, but if 3D phones are to be taken seriously, and not just a novelty, perhaps taking it into HD quality would be the step in that direction.
