Microsoft taking 30% cut from Windows 8 Metro apps

It was popular belief that Microsoft would be hosting apps on Windows 8’s app store, but it looks like Metro apps will not be free after all. Microsoft is following in Apple’s footsteps and are charging developers a 30% cut for hosting their apps on their store. Given that Windows 8 is a largely untested market at the moment, you would think that Microsoft would try to attract developers over onto their official store with free hosting, even if for limited period of time, but it doesn’t appear to be that way.

The good news is that developers will have the option of distributing their apps via other channels should they not wish to use the store, but given how it is the official store, exposure and a certain level of trust comes along with it.
