AT&T Not Unlocking iPhones

Earlier we reported that unlocked iPhone 4’s were now on sale at the Apple Stores and this was great news for those who wanted to get their hands on an iPhone without having to be locked down to a carrier. For those who are on a carrier, the news may not be so good.

AT&T was one of the first carriers to bring the iPhone to the public and they have been holding that exclusive deal until recently. However despite the availability of unlocked iPhone 4’s in the market, AT&T has apparently no near plans in the future to unlock iPhone 4’s who are currently locked to their network. No word from AT&T on why this is so, perhaps some technical issues have to be overcome before unlocking the device or perhaps this is just AT&T’s policy regarding locked handsets.

Either way it does not look good for AT&T users at the moment.
