Vizio’s Smartphone Gets FCC Approval

Vizio who are known mainly for as the makers of inexpensive television sets have got their smartphone recently approved by the FCC. It was stated in their press release in January that they will be making “multiple consumer electronic devices including VIZIO HDTVs, Blu-ray players, SmartPhones and Tablets.”

“The VIA Plus Phone and Tablet will be based on the Android Platform and feature built-in IR blaster with universal remote control app, HD playback with HDMI output, and access to hundreds of thousands of apps in Android Market.” The IR blaster with universal remote control is a rather interesting feature that Vizio decided to include in their phone meaning it could very well be used as a remote for their television sets as well. Way to go on product integration!

The device is said to be sporting a 4-inch 854×480 LCD screen with a front facing camera and running on a 1GHz Snapdragon processor with 4GB of internal memory and support for expandable memory. As far as the operating system goes it seems that it will be either getting the Android Froyo 2.2 or the Gingerbread 2.3. All things considered if it did come with the Gingerbread 2.3.4 (most updated version) it might attract more customers than if it came with Froyo 2.2.

It will most likely be supported by AT&T although there has been no official word on release date or pricing at the moment.
