T-Mobile Blocks Video Chat on Google Talk

If you were hoping to get your hands on T-Mobile’s Samsung Nexus S, or if you already have the Nexus S then you may be in for some bad news. It seems that the carrier has blocked users from accessing video chat while on a 3G connection.

The Nexus S has been updated to Android’s Gingerbread 2.3.4 (if you did not already know, you may now proceed to update it), and part of that update was the addition of Google Video and Voice via Google Talk. Sprint users using the Nexus S have had no problems with video chat via Google Talk while on 3G connections, but it seems that the folks at T-Mobile have been blocking it and it is only usable via WiFi.

T-Mobile has not made any official announcement with regards to them blocking video chat via Google Talk just yet and all of this seems to have been down rather quietly which would have been a rather nasty surprise to those on T-Mobile who suddenly realize they are unable to video call unless they are on a WiFi connection. Could this just be an issue with T-Mobile’s connections or are they performing some tests or are they planning to make this permanent? With T-Mobile already losing so many customers it does not seem in their best interests to further aggravate their remaining ones.
