Sony’s 13.3-Inch Flexible Color E-Paper

During SID 2011, Sony revealed their 13.3-inch color e-paper device. Taken from Tech-On’s website:

“The e-paper device has a 13% color gamut on NTSC standards, a reflectance of 10% and a contrast ratio higher than 100,000:1. Its pixel consists of red, green, blue and white sub-pixels, and the pixel count is 800 x 1,200. The sub-pixel measures 169μm x 169μm. The resolution and gradation of the screen are 75ppi and 16, respectively.”

The concept is good, however the quality of the reproduction is not just there at the moment with the colors being rather washed out instead of sharp and vibrant that one could expect from a proper LCD. As for its functionality what do you see the foldable e-paper being used for? It could double as a newspaper that updated daily which could help save the environment by using less paper. In fact thanks to its foldability it could be rolled up and tucked under your arm like they did back in the old days.
