OmniVision’s Camera Sensor Could Make Future iPhone’s Thinner

As we mentioned in an earlier post we mentioned that OmniVision is the company that provides image sensors for the iPhone. Today the company has revealed a newer sensor, the OV5690 which is not only slimmer but is also capable of recording full HD 1080p video at 30fps (frames per second).

The next iPhone – the iPhone 4S is already speculated to feature an 8mp camera so in case you were hoping that this would be the image sensor making its way to the iPhone 4S, chances are you will be disappointed. However it does seem that the slimmer sensor and HD recording capabilities does make it look like a great candidate for future iOS devices, perhaps the iPhone 5 and/or the iPad 3 or even iPod devices.

If the rumors are true that the iPhone 4S is coming with an 8mp camera then the OV5690, which is currently a 5mp sensor, would be a downgrade for iPhone 4S users who wish to upgrade to the iPhone 5. While the ability to shoot in full HD 1080p quality at 30fps is great, the idea of owning a camera that is 5mp which is a downgrade from the 8mp could be a deterrent for consumers who may not know that having more megapixels does not necessarily mean a good thing.
