North Korea Crackdown on Cellphones

Published

on

It has been reported by CNN that North Korea has launched a drive to confiscate all unlicensed cellphones in an attempt to prevent ‘those spreading capitalist ideas and eroding socialism.” The police have warned that there would be special devices employed that could detect cellphones and any offenders caught would be punished.

“Police in North Hamkyong and Yangkang provinces bordering Russia and China have started urging residents to voluntarily surrender mobile phones or face punishment.”

Unlicensed cellphones have usually been found near the border as cell signals are better received from neighboring countries. It is believed that this crackdown is because there is to be a hand off of leadership from Kim Jong Il to his son Kim Jong-Un.
