No iOS 5 For iPhone 3GS?

Bad news for iPhone 3GS users – it looks like you will not be enjoying the features of iOS 5, at least if the rumors are true. Eldar Murtazin who has a pretty solid reputation in the mobile phone rumor community had reported via Twitter:

“Just one comment. Apple iPhone 3Gs wont be upgradable to iOS 5.x. iPhone 4 will.”

So far Apple has done a pretty job keeping fragmentation at the bare minimum, with iOS 4 supporting the iPhone 3G up to the iPhone 4, although with some features not being available on the older hardware, which is totally excusable. Apple managed to keep iOS 4 on the iPhone 3G until iOS 4.3.3, meaning the latest OS update on the iPhone 3G is 4.2.1, which is still pretty decent.

If it is true that they are only making iOS 5 available for the iPhone 4 and later, it could mean that the new operating system will be demanding some pretty high end specs that perhaps the iPhone 3GS will not be able to handle, and considering that iOS 5 was meant to be a pretty big reworking of Apple’s mobile operating system, it would not be surprising if the hardware requirements that came along with it would not be iPhone 3GS friendly. I guess iPhone 3GS users who have been holding out for the next generation iPhone should start considering their choices or jump ship to Android perhaps? Or perhaps this is as good an excuse as any to change phones.
