Mobiles for Automobiles

So Sony has recently joined the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) which is a group of phone and car companies that are dedicated to bringing about connectivity from phones to cars.

The CCC was formed in March and counts Nokia, Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Alpine, Daimler, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Toyota and VW among its members. The idea is to develop a system to present a dashboard display of apps running from a smartphone which will be connected through either USB, Bluetooth or WiFi.

The CCC plans to launch some commercial viable products some time later this year and it will be interesting to see what will be developed from all of this. As of right now the only car integration I can think of is probably music and some type of handsfree system. Why would anyone need to check their e-mails or surf Facebook while driving anyway?
