Google Working On Chrome OS Phones?

A recent report has suggested that Google is now working on an entire range of smartphones but wait for it, it will not be running on the Android operating system but rather on the Chrome OS instead, which will most probably see a release in 2012 or 2013. With Android already owning the majority of the smartphone market share, and with Google recently announcing the much anticipated Ice Cream Sandwich which will be released some time end of the year, why would they go on and create a brand new operating system?

I guess they’re trying to do what Apple is doing by manufacturing their own devices and operating system instead of relying on other manufacturers to create devices that will carry the Android operating system. Firstly this will probably address the issue with fragmentation that has been plaguing Android devices and secondly it seems that other phone manufacturers have started to create their own platforms so if Google wants to maintain their hold on the smartphone market this seems like the smart move to make.

If you’re looking for any indication on how the Chrome operating system will be like on the phone you would only have to take a look at the new Chrome OS notebooks to get an idea. Chrome OS already supports the running of applications as we can see with Angry Birds being able to be played on the Chrome browser already. So Android users how do you feel about this?
