Google claims 100 million Android Activations in 2011

Is it me or is 100 million Android activations just for the year 2011 an insane number? If anything it only helps to further cement the fact that Android is growing at a phenomenal pace. Also on average it seems that 400,000 Android devices are being activated daily.

This information was shared at Google’s I/O developer conference which is currently being held in San Francisco.

Product Management Director Hugo Barra proudly claimed Android as a platform of many choices. It can be found on 36 original equipment manufacturers and 215 carriers. There are also 310 Android devices are on the market in 112 countries compared to the Apple, which has around a dozen iOS devices on the market.

Personally I feel this isn’t really a fair comparison as Apple makes their own devices much unlike Google who mainly just provides manufacturers the operating system to run on. Regardless this is indeed quite a milestone in the whole Apple vs. Android race and Android can only continue to grow with Honeycomb 3.1 to be rolled out today followed by Ice Cream Sandwich 3.4 further down the road. More and more manufacturers will be creating new devices in order to fully utilize the promised features of Android’s future operating systems.
