BBM Cross Platform Rumours Quashed

You might have heard some faint rumors some time back of the possibility that RIM’s BBM service might just very well go cross platform. Those rumors unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately?) have been quashed at the recent Blackberry World Q&A for developers whereby Research in Motion’s Mike Kirkup said that RIM had no plans or intentions of taking BBM to the other platforms.

This probably did not come as a surprise as BBM as the name suggests is Blackberry Messenger therefore it’s not too hard to imagine how well that name would sit with the other platforms out there, namely iOS, Android and Windows Phone 7. Not to mention BBM although quite revolutionary at that time has already been upstaged by other messaging apps such as Whatsapp which is already cross platform for the most part.

If RIM were to release BBM on other platforms not only would they lose one of the features that made them unique but what other reason would there be to purchase a Blackberry device when you could easily download BBM onto another device?

If you are interested there is a video recorded by BerryReview during the Blackberry World Q&A. For questions regarding BBM going cross platform you may skip forwards to the 4 minute mark.
