Apple Pushing For Smaller SIM Cards

Published

on

As if the micro SIM was not small enough, it seems that Apple and a carrier in France – Orange, have both submitted proposals for an even smaller sized SIM card. A nano SIM perhaps?

What this could mean is that it would allow more space within the device for Apple to build their technology around. Perhaps more storage capacity or a bigger battery, or a thinner device and additional sensors. Could it also be that Apple is pursuing the embeddable SIM card where upon purchase of the iPhone, customers could choose their carriers there and then at the Apple store and activate it all in the same location, thus reducing the need for carrier support?

It does seem to be a rather good idea as it allows for convenience but at the same time it does hamper the carriers ability to cross-sell some of their other products. Either way it seems unlikely that we will be seeing nano SIM cards any time soon, even if the proposal were to be passed.
