A Dirt Powered Mobile Phone

It seems that going green is all the rage these days and one of the winners at the 6th Grand Challenges in Global Health competition, launched by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation found that dirt powered battery could be used to power phones at remote health care facilities.

“New Explorations grantee Erez Lieberman-Aiden and a team at Harvard University in the U.S. are developing a low-cost microbial fuel cell that recharges using free electrons found in soil bacteria.”

I don’t see why it can only be used at remote areas when you could very well be charging our phones in our very own backyard, or perhaps if you stayed in an apartment just buy a potted plant with lots of dirt in it. Not only would you be helping to save the environment but you could also reduce your electricity bills as well!

Although as to how much power and how long it would take to power up your phone still remains to be seen but I’m going to be guessing it won’t be as efficient as if you were to use electricity.
