At a press event today, Sprint announced a new phone that’s bound to make any tree hugger proud – the Samsung Replenish (even its name is so positive!). On the surface it’s not much to look at – just a simple entry-level Android handset that features a Motorola Droid Pro/BlackBerry form factor with a QWERTY keyboard under its touchscreen. But what makes the phone special is the materials it is made of. The phone is free of intentionally added polyvinyl chloride (PVC), brominated flame retardants, phthalates and beryllium, it is energy efficient – with a charger that meets the EC Code of Conduct on Energy Efficiency of External Power Supplies, Version 4, its casing is made of 34.6% post-consumer recycled plastic content, and 82% of the device is made from recyclable material. Even the packaging it comes in is fully recyclable. The phone packs a 2.8″ QVGA display, Android 2.2, a 2 megapixel camera, and a microSD card slot (up to 32GB). Folks who purchase the phone also get $10 off for their monthly data charges. The Samsung Replenish will cost $49.99 after an instant $100 rebate and will go on sale May 8.
