Amazon has announced an update to their Kindle app for Android devices. The latest version of Kindle for Android is now optimized to work for Android tablets. Previous versions of the app were designed with the small screen of smartphones in mind, so when Honeycomb was introduced, the app couldn’t take full advantage of the tablet’s extra screen real estate.

The new Kindle for Android tablets will feature a new layout for newspapers and magazines designed for the Honeycomb interface, and include many other features that work better on larger displays. In addition to working better on tablets, the core features of Kindle are there – Whispersync technology that allows users to pick up a book where they left off when reading on another device i.e. start a book on your phone in the train, and go home to continue on your tablet in bed etc. Other new features include: a seamless and integrated shopping experience, refined newspaper and magazine layout including full color images, ability to pause and resume downloads at any time, an enhanced word look-up capability with a built-in dictionary that contains over 250,000 entries and definitions.

The app is available for free on the Android Market or the Amazon Appstore for Android.
