Google removes Grooveshark from Android market

Grooveshark has been under criticism as some of the top music labels have accused the service of violating copyright laws. And now it was Google’s turn to shun Grooveshark as Google has gone ahead and removed the music app from Android market. Google says that it removed the app as it was violating certain terms of service, though the exact violations were not specified. None of the Grooveshark executives were available to comment on this development. Interestingly, the removal of this app happened on the eve of a hearing today before members of the House Judiciary committee in which Kent Walker, Google’s general counsel, is scheduled to testify. Google is scheduled to testify against a subcommittee that investigates sites that allegedly traffic in pirated or counterfeit goods. Google has been dogged by accusations that the company profits from piracy by allowing alleged pirate sites to post Google ads. Google denies this and is expected to outline the company’s antipiracy efforts at today’s hearing.
