Japan’s Telecom Sector slowly recovering after the catastrophic earthquake
Japan was shattered by the earthquake which measured 8.9 on the Richter magnitude scale and the Tsunami that followed. Given the state of the country, it is commendable that people are still able to get in touch with each other beacuse of the efforts put in by the specialized civil workers in the country. The fact though is that carriers are finding it hard to get the disrupted fixed services back on track. Regular power cuts beacuse of the damaged nuclear plants is making things tougher and people are preferring mobile services to fixed lines in these circumstances. Even the carriers are ensuring that it is the mobile networks which get repaired first to facilitate telecommunication that can still be of help to natives.
It was earlier reported that NTT DoCoMo had 2,130 of its mobile base stations still out of service, compared to 6,720 which were inoperative immediately after the quake. Likewise, KDDI had 1,500 non-functioning base stations, down from 3,800, while Softbank reduced its inoperative base stations from 3,786 to 1,157. It seems that Japan is recovering faster than expectations in the telecom sector which is important to keep people connected in such difficult times.
