BBC releases iPlayer for Android

BBC has just launched the official BBC iPlayer app for Android devices that was teased about earlier this week. The app that allows users to watch and listen to their favorite BBC TV or Radio shows either live or recorded is now available to users with Android phones in the UK. The app allows users to find Featured and Most Popular shows, favorite them, set alerts for new episodes, and even browse through schedules for upcoming programs. Like most apps that are first released, it comes with some flaws – users will only be able to enjoy their BBC content over WiFi. No explanation was given (maybe BBC struck a deal with carriers to prevent overuse of the country’s bandwidth?) but at least for now you won’t be able to use your 3G or 4G connection to watch your favorite Top Gear episodes. Hopefully 3G/4G data support will be included in the future. It is uncertain if we’ll see the app on this side of the world, but for those of you in the UK, head to the Android Market to download the free app now and let us know what you think of it.
