WiMAX operators gather to draft global roaming agreements

With LTE becoming increasingly popular, thanks to Verizon, it’ll be interesting to see how WiMAX tries to fend off the challenge and now sixteen WiMAX operators from around the world have convened in Taipei for the WiMAX Forum Global Operator Summit this week to draft an international roaming agreement for their 4G networks. Considering that global roaming is projected to be a $67 billion business by 2015, we do hope that they hammer out a good deal.

The press release states that the meeting was created to specifically address the issue of overcoming both business and consumer perceptions that data roaming is expensive, and to explore ways to help operators grow revenue. Considering the costs that folks have to pay for roaming at the moment, hopefully this means that roaming will become cheaper in the future instead of us being brainwashed into thinking that it’s cheap.
