Canalys: Android is top smartphone platform

While other platforms were busy gaining popularity at the expense of Symbian, one thing that Symbian had for it was that it was still the top of the pile, due to sheer numbers. Now Canalys’ latest smartphone sales figures will probably bring a frown to Symbian supporters as it shows that Android phone makers managed to move a juicy 33.3 million phones in the last quarter, more than any other platform out there, including Symbian, which managed 31 million units. This is a huge leap from the 20.3 million Android-powered devices that were estimated sold in Q3 of 2010. Symbian did grow too, but only from 29.9 million in Q3 to 31 million in Q4, so it’s definitely not any explosive growth. At this rate, will Symbian continue be left behind by other platforms?
