NavFree for the iPhone now in the States

NavFree, the popular free navigation/maps app on the iPhone/iPod touch has just launched on this side of the world. Previously available only in the UK, users stateside can now enjoy an alternative, free mapping service instead of having to stick to Google Maps. One of the main benefits NavFree has over Google Maps is that all maps are stored locally- there is no need for you to rely on network coverage, just in case you get lost in some part of the woods with no reception. The maps are also taken from OpenStreetMap – an open source mapping system created and constantly updated by its 250,000+ users. NavFree also packs voice guidance, turn by turn navigation and the standard GPS features. The only problem with having maps stored locally is that it comes with a much larger footprint – it weighs in at a hefty 1.76GB on the iTunes App Store. On 32GB iPhones, this shouldn’t be a problem, but those with smaller iPhones might want to think twice. Head over to the iTunes App Store to download NavFree for free.
