One of the most talked about features of the latest version of Android has got to be the introduction of near field communication technology. Though this technology has already been around in other parts of the world, it’s relatively new and unused on this side of the world. Near field communication (NFC) basically enables the exchange of data between two devices within a 10cm radius of each other. The possibilities for using NFC haven’t been fully explored yet. But some of the ways you can use it include as a mobile wallet for payments or as a virtual ticket for travelling. NFC can also be used for marketing purposes. Imagine going up to a movie poster that has been embedded with an NFC tag and reading it with your phone. It can instantly launch a website showing the movie trailer on your phone. But like a double edged sword, all technology can be used for good and bad purposes. Imagine walking into a store with an NFC device hidden by the door, and as soon as you walk past the entrance, you get bombarded with ads. But it’s still too early to tell if this feature will be widespread and adopted all over the world. If it does, let’s hope it’s not just to give spammers another outlet to reach smartphone users. What do you think of NFC? Do you think it’s essential to get a phone that is NFC capable at the moment?
