BioLock aims to bring biometric authentication to Android

Besides video calling, front facing cameras can be used for other purposes such as security. No I’m not talking about acting as a security camera, but for biometric authentication. By scanning the user’s eye or face, people can secure their phones without the use of PIN codes or passwords anymore. The folks over at Blue Planet Apps have come up something called BioLock and recently released a demo video of it in action. Blue Planet Apps have plans to use BioLock to replace lock screens, secure a user’s contacts, dialer, and essentially everything they want to protect. It also connects to the Microsoft Azure cloud so that authentication can be used on any device and not just your own phone. This would mean that banks, hospitals and government offices can use this technology to verify your identity.  Sounds like a great idea, though there’s no mention of any release date except that Samsung and Nokia phones will be shipping with BioLock in the future. Though I’ve always wondered, can you fool biometric security by just holding up a picture of a person in front of the camera? Watch the video demo after the break:
