The world is a strange place to be. It could be a horrible place to be too if you’re an unmarried girl who is caught texting or talking on the phone and you live in Lank, a little village North of India. According to a new local ruling that was recently passed, unmarried women are banned from using cellphones to communicate. The reason for this? Women and men have been secretly arranging marriages on their own with the use of phones, and it goes against their custom of arranged marriages. The people of Lank have been practicing arranged marriages for a long time in efforts to prevent marriages within the same clan, because the punishment for such a forbidden marriage is death. Unmarried men in the village are allowed to use mobile phones, but they have to be under parental supervision. I guess the only way you’ll get to freely chat with your friends in Lank is to get married, and hope your friends get married too so you’ll all have access to phones. We’ve learnt to depend on phones so often now; can you imagine what life would be like without access to a phone?
