Despite a number of phone manufacturers choosing not to continue making Symbian handsets, and only a handful who are willing to do so, the operating system made popular by Nokia is still going strong. The Symbian Foundation recently received a generous donation from the European Union to continue working on improving the operating system, as it was deemed vital to the future of Euro-centric mobile development. The 22 million euro donation to the foundation will enable them to keep working on next generation technologies for the Symbian platform. Together with 24 different companies, in 8 different European countries, they have formed the SYMBEOSE (Symbian – the Embedded Operating System for Europe). Will the support and backing of the European be enough to propel Symbian out from the slumps? Only time will tell.
