Qualcomm, creators of the infamous Snapdragon processors that have been used in countless phones, has just released a beta version of its Augmented Reality (AR) Extension for Unity Technologies’ game development tool. This will allow developers to combine computer generated content with visuals captured from the phone’s camera in upcoming Android-based games. By integrating their technology with an existing development tool (Unity), Qualcomm hopes that more people will use it in their games. Qualcomm is also organizing a contest for the best AR app to attract more developer interest. The winner will be awarded a whopping $125,000. So if you’re a developer  and you use Unity to create games for Android, head over to Qualcomm’s developer portal to download the extension and development kit, if you have an app that’s good enough you might just walk away with the grand prize. In the near future, expect to see games where you can shoot up monsters that look like people around you. What great ideas do you have for an AR based game?
