Nokia to release Symbian updates early next year

In an announcement at the Symbian Exchange & Exposition, Nokia stated that they will be releasing updates for their Symbian platform early next year. Now since they have total control over the operating system, they have decided to focus on the platform’s development. They mentioned that in the past, Nokia devices have only been subject to one or two updates before they were left alone. Now, with Nokia removing the ^3 and ^4 from the Symbian name, they plan to incorporate new features planned for the other versions into the current version of Symbian^3. This means that the Symbian operating system will eventually be built up and constantly improving into the version of Symbian that they have envisioned previously. New features to be added in 2011 are: split-screen text entry, portrait QWERTY and Swype integrated into the UI, a new browser that features a more modern browsing experience. Seems to me that Nokia is doing all they can to make sure they stay relevant against the smartphone competition, but something tells me they’re gonna have to try harder than that. What do you think about Symbian?
