More Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone details revealed

According to a tipster who was at a recently held private event, the phone is real and was present there. The tipster got a good look at it and even got a chance to play with it, and he/she was very impressed with the gaming experience. Here are some other details that were leaked by the tipster:

– The screen is “mind-blowing” and on par with iPhone 4’s retina display, and uses some of Sony’s Bravia technology.

– It won’t ship in time for the holidays, but Sony Ericsson are aiming for a February release.

– It will be priced somewhere around $500 off-contract, with 5 free games. And games will be priced like mobile games, not PSP games (around $10 or less).

– It’s unclear whether regular downloaded PSP games would work on the phone, but most probably it will be a new, independent line-up of games specifically built for the platform. It could also be the reason that Sony Ericsson is pushing the phone with the Xperia brand instead of the PlayStation brand.

– It’s still unclear whether games will be purchased through an independent app or through the Android Market, but Sony Ericsson will be working closely with Google on this.

If the story turns out to be true, it does sound like a pretty interesting device, though I think it’s quite strange for Sony Ericsson to release a platform that competes directly with their own PSP- after all, if it doesn’t run PSP games, they would need to get developers on board to create games for their brand new system as well. What are your thoughts about the PlayStation Phone?
