Android, Google’s open source mobile operating system celebrates its 3rd birthday today. Three years ago, November 5, 2007, Google announced the birth of Android as a platform and the Open Handset Alliance (Google and 34 other partners) was formed to provide a business backbone for the operating system. Almost one year later on October 22, 2008, the first Android phone, the T-Mobile G1, was made commercially available to the public. Now, 3 years and countless handsets later, we have a version of Android that looks and behaves very different from its original inception. But one thing remains- its flexibility and high degree of customizability- apps and Android itself can be coded to do a lot of things besides run your smartphone.
